Am I a candidate for weight loss surgery? If you are considering a weight loss surgery, several requirements must be met before a surgeon will perform a bariatric procedure. Weight loss surgery is geared for morbidly obese individuals, which occurs when obesity reaches the point of increasing the risk and probability of one or more obesity related health conditions or diseases, resulting in physical limitations or death. The Minnesota Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIMIS) has devised specific program requirements in conjunction with the National Institute of Health’s primary guidelines. 1) Attend MIMIS weight loss seminar. 2) Thorough physical examination completed by the individual’s primary care physician. 3) Medical records must be sent to MIMIS. 4) The following appointments will be scheduled for the individual and must be completed:
5) A surgical procedure must be chosen and surgery scheduled. 6) Four weeks of the Atkin’s Diet must be completed. 7) Surgical follow-up. 8) Morbid obesity must be documented for a minimum of two years. Past medical history should show documentation of serious attempts at weight loss through organized and supervised programs.
