Dr. Michael J. Black

Dr. Black received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse and his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.  He completed his surgical residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison.  Dr. Black was awarded the University of Wisconsin Basic Science Research Award in 2005 and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.  He is a Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserves.

Through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), Dr. Black was matched with the Minnesota Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIMIS) to complete a one year fellowship in minimally invasive laparoendoscopic surgery.  The process of matching candidates with fellowship programs is exacting – and highly competitive.  This year, 170 surgeons applied for positions at 124 Fellowship Programs. The fellowship allows Dr. Black the opportunity to work alongside MIMIS surgeons to further refine his minimally invasive surgical skills.

“We’re elated- and honored- to have such a well qualified and highly sought after surgeon choose to train with us, ” states Dr. Paul Severson, Director for the Fellowship Program and co-director of MIMIS.  Dr. Black began his training at MIMIS in July 2007.
